In a time marked by global instability and shifting power dynamics, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has underscored Japan’s commitment to international law and multilateral cooperation. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Takaichi emphasized the importance of the United Nations in maintaining global peace and stability, a necessity she highlighted as the post-Cold War era of relative stability appears to have ended.

Addressing world leaders for the first time since taking office, Takaichi reaffirmed Japan’s support for the International Criminal Court (ICC) and advocated for reforms within the United Nations, particularly its Security Council. She argued for a more representative membership that better reflects the international community’s diverse perspectives, thus enhancing the body’s legitimacy and effectiveness.

Japan’s longstanding support for international judicial bodies, including the ICC, was a focal point of Takaichi’s address. While she did not directly mention the U.S. sanctions imposed on ICC President Tomoko Akane, a Japanese national, her remarks underscored Japan’s dedication to upholding the rule of law on the global stage.

The prime minister also addressed pressing geopolitical issues, notably criticizing Russia’s military actions in Ukraine and labeling any unilateral attempts to alter the status quo by force as unacceptable. Takaichi called for increased international efforts to curb North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, while also expressing Japan’s willingness to engage in dialogue to resolve the longstanding issue of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea.

On economic and energy fronts, Takaichi emphasized the need for strengthening ties with Gulf countries to ensure stable energy supplies amidst disruptions affecting major trade routes. She advocated for greater international collaboration on critical resources and advancements in artificial intelligence, highlighting these as key areas for future resilience and security.
