In Tokyo, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale met for the first time, aiming to bolster ties between their nations amidst a shift in the Pacific island’s foreign policy landscape. The leaders expressed a commitment to deepen development collaboration, with Japan pledging 3 billion yen (around $18.3 million) in yen loans and advocating for enhanced people-to-people interactions. Takaichi emphasized Japan’s intent to forge a “strong and prosperous cooperative relationship” with the Solomon Islands, grounded in mutual principles of freedom, democracy, the rule of law, and human rights.
Wale acknowledged Japan’s support, underscoring the challenges Pacific island nations face in terms of economic and development needs. This meeting follows notable changes in Solomon Islands’ diplomatic approach. The country, in 2019, shifted its diplomatic allegiance from Taiwan to China and subsequently, in 2022, entered a security agreement with Beijing. This agreement allowed Chinese naval access to its ports and permitted Chinese security operatives within its borders, sparking concerns among regional allies about China’s expanding influence in the Pacific region.
Since assuming office in May 2026, Prime Minister Wale has indicated a potential reevaluation of this stance. He has committed to reassessing the security agreement with China, voiced criticism regarding China’s recent submarine-launched ballistic missile test in the Pacific, and shown a tendency towards strengthening ties with traditional allies, evident through his visits to Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Japan.
Japan’s engagement with the Solomon Islands aligns with its broader strategic aim of promoting a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, which seeks to enhance regional stability and security through cooperation. This vision is crucial as Japan looks to counterbalance China’s growing strategic presence in the region.
In a symbolic gesture of goodwill, Takaichi presented Wale with a football from the Nara Prefectural Football Association, acknowledging the sport’s popularity in the Solomon Islands and reflecting Takaichi’s personal connections to Nara Prefecture.
