Japan Defense Ministry to Integrate Startup Tech in New Procurement System

by admin477351

Japan’s Defense Ministry is set to launch a new procurement system aimed at integrating advanced technologies from startups into its defense equipment, according to Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to encourage startups’ participation in the defense sector by providing upfront funding for technology development.

The fast-track program focuses on harnessing innovations in areas such as drones, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies crucial for modern warfare. The ministry plans to initially invite proposals for cost-effective, mass-producible small attack drones and related equipment to enhance the capabilities of the Ground Self-Defense Force and Maritime Self-Defense Force. A key aspect of the program is the prioritization of components produced domestically.

In the initial phase, several promising companies will be selected at the concept stage. These candidates will be gradually narrowed down through a process of prototype development and testing. This approach aims to ensure that the most effective technologies are adopted for defense purposes.

Beyond drones, the ministry is also seeking innovations that could improve warehouse management and reduce staffing needs, as well as technology that could minimize aircraft noise and enhance working conditions for the Air Self-Defense Force personnel.

Applications for the first round of proposals will open on October 2. The Defense Ministry expects that this new system will accelerate the adoption of innovative technologies, thereby strengthening Japan’s defense capabilities.
