In a significant move to bolster cybersecurity defenses, approximately 150 organizations from over 15 countries, including government agencies and financial institutions in Japan, have been granted access to an advanced artificial intelligence model known as Claude Mythos. Developed by Anthropic, this model is being used for cybersecurity testing and research. Before utilizing the model, participating organizations must adhere to stringent security protocols to effectively identify vulnerabilities within their systems and enhance protections against potential cyber threats.

Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama has acknowledged the involvement of government institutions and several banks in Japan as part of this initiative. Katayama views this access as a crucial step in equipping the nation for future challenges in the realm of cybersecurity. Claude Mythos is categorized under “frontier AI,” a class of sophisticated systems that can uncover weaknesses in intricate digital infrastructures, thus serving as vital instruments for security research. However, experts caution that without proper controls, these capabilities may be exploited to attack critical infrastructure.

The European Union has also secured access to this cutting-edge technology, with the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) set to engage in the program. European officials have expressed their approval of this development, aligning it with ongoing efforts to enhance cyber resilience across the continent.

In parallel, OpenAI is reportedly on the verge of offering one of its own advanced AI models to major financial institutions in Japan. This move underscores the burgeoning international interest in leveraging frontier AI technologies to fortify cybersecurity defenses globally.
