Vietnam and Japan are set to enhance their defense collaboration, focusing on crucial strategic sectors such as military training, cybersecurity, and the development of the defense industry. This agreement also includes cooperation in United Nations peacekeeping missions and efforts to recover from the aftermath of wars. The decision was reached during a meeting in Hanoi between Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, General Phan Văn Giang, and General Uchikura Hiroaki, the Chief of Staff of Japan’s Self-Defence Forces.

In their discussions, General Giang highlighted Vietnam’s dedication to bolstering consultation and dialogue mechanisms, fostering collaboration across various military branches, and advancing partnerships in defense technology, military medicine, and cybersecurity. He pointed out that defense relations are a significant component of the broader Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations. General Giang also acknowledged Japan’s role in supporting Vietnam through personnel training, defense industry development, technology transfer, and post-war recovery initiatives. Furthermore, he advocated for increased scholarship and training opportunities for Vietnamese defense personnel, particularly in the fields of science, engineering, and technology.

Japan stands as one of Vietnam’s vital economic and strategic allies, with robust cooperation extending across trade, investment, development aid, and labor exchanges. The meeting in Hanoi underscored the shared commitment to strengthening these ties and implementing existing cooperation agreements more effectively.

General Uchikura confirmed Japan’s dedication to fortifying defense relations with Vietnam. He expressed support for expanding cooperation in high-level exchanges, military education, cybersecurity, and healthcare services within the armed forces. The Japanese General’s reaffirmation of commitment highlights the mutual interest in enhancing defense capabilities and regional stability.

Concluding the discussions, both parties agreed to maintain close coordination to further build mutual trust and ensure long-term strategic cooperation. The collaboration is aimed at bolstering regional stability and strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and Japan, reflecting a shared vision for future defense and security endeavors.
