This tremor has particularly affected Kumamoto Prefecture, a critical hub for chip manufacturing, often referred to as part of Japan’s “Silicon Island.” Major manufacturers such as TSMC, Renesas Electronics, Sony, Mitsubishi Electric, and Tokyo Electron operate key facilities in this area and have been forced to pause operations to evaluate the extent of the damage.
Despite reports from some factories indicating minimal structural damage, the production process remains suspended. This is largely because the sensitive nature of semiconductor equipment demands thorough inspection and recalibration before resuming normal operations. Additionally, the earthquake has caused significant disruptions to transportation networks, complicating logistics and raising fears of potential delays in the shipment of chips.
The ripple effects of this natural disaster have spread beyond the semiconductor sector, impacting other industries as well. Toyota, for instance, has temporarily shut down production at several of its plants due to issues with suppliers and logistics. Similarly, Honda has extended the closure of its motorcycle manufacturing facility located in Kumamoto. Other manufacturers in the region are in the process of assessing the damage caused by the quake before deciding on the timeline for resuming their operations.
