Amid growing global economic uncertainties, Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are set to explore the expansion of their economic partnership. The primary focus of this initiative will be on enhancing supply chain resilience, bolstering energy security, and incorporating artificial intelligence into economic frameworks. This decision emerged from a meeting of economic ministers held in Manila on September 20.

Japan and ASEAN plan to reassess their existing agreement, which has been in place since 2008, to address new challenges such as risks to global supply chains and the transformative impact of AI on the economy. Additionally, discussions highlighted the necessity of maintaining stable energy supplies, particularly given ongoing disruptions in critical routes across the Middle East.

As part of the strategy to improve energy security within the ASEAN region, Japan reiterated its commitment to support the strengthening of oil stockpiles in these nations. This move is seen as a crucial step towards securing stable energy resources amid current geopolitical tensions and uncertainties in global trade.

Since its inception, the Japan-ASEAN economic partnership agreement has expanded to include trade in services and investment sectors. The economic relationship between the two recorded a significant $245.4 billion in merchandise trade by 2025, with Japanese investments in ASEAN reaching $9.5 billion.

With the backdrop of these substantial trade and investment figures, both parties emphasized the importance of closer economic cooperation to navigate the challenges posed by the evolving global landscape. The ministers underscored the need to adapt the partnership to better reflect today’s economic realities and to safeguard against future disruptions.
