The United States has introduced new tariffs reaching as high as 100% on certain drone imports and their components, driven by national security concerns and a strategic push to diminish dependence on foreign supply chains, particularly those dominated by China. This policy specifically targets unmanned aircraft systems, with a focus on larger drones that weigh over 25 kilograms and possess capabilities critical to national security, such as thermal imaging cameras and docking stations. These will be subject to a steep 100% tariff, while smaller drones will face a 25% tariff.
In addition to these measures, the US plans to impose tariffs on drones and related components from several key trading partners. Imports originating from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will incur a 15% tariff, whereas products from the United Kingdom will see a 10% tariff, contingent on the hardware, software, and technology being sourced from within these countries or the US. The majority of these tariffs are slated to be enforced starting September 3.
The White House has framed these actions as a means to bolster the US defense and industrial base, stimulate the domestic drone manufacturing sector, and create jobs in America, all while curbing reliance on overseas suppliers. China is currently a major player in the global drone market, with Shenzhen-based DJI capturing a substantial portion of the US commercial drone market. The company has already been under US scrutiny due to national security apprehensions.
US officials have expressed concerns that drones manufactured abroad could pose significant risks, including unauthorized surveillance, sensitive data collection, and potential threats. In line with this, the US Federal Communications Commission has previously advocated for increased domestic production of drones to mitigate these risks. This policy comes amid ongoing trade and technology disputes between Washington and Beijing. In response, China has implemented restrictions impacting drone exports to the US and has taken actions against various American companies.
