Experts particularly emphasize that tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of cancer globally. Smoking is not only associated with lung cancer but also with cancers affecting the mouth, throat, bladder, kidney, pancreas, and esophagus. Even non-smokers are at risk due to passive smoking, which can elevate the likelihood of lung cancer. Notably, quitting smoking can swiftly diminish cancer risk, with significant health benefits becoming apparent within a few years.

Obesity is identified as another significant risk factor linked to several types of cancer, including breast, colon, kidney, endometrial, and esophageal cancers. Excess body fat may lead to increased inflammation and hormonal changes that foster conditions conducive to tumor development. In contrast, regular physical activity is suggested as a means to potentially lower cancer risk. Health professionals recommend engaging in at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly, such as brisk walking, cycling, or light workouts, as it may help reduce inflammation, improve hormonal balance, and enhance overall metabolic health.

The dangers of prolonged sitting are also underscored by doctors, with extended daily periods of inactivity possibly increasing the risk of colorectal and endometrial cancers, even among those who exercise regularly. Experts advise cutting down on processed meats like sausages, bacon, and deli meats, which have been linked to an elevated risk of colorectal cancer. Similarly, high consumption of red meat has been associated with an increased risk of bowel cancer. Alcohol consumption is another significant factor, as even moderate drinking may elevate the risk of breast, liver, and colorectal cancers.

Conversely, diets rich in fiber, vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, and whole foods are believed to help lower cancer risk. Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, kale, and cabbage are noted for containing compounds that may bolster the body’s natural defenses. Additionally, doctors draw attention to lesser-known risk factors, including excessive sun exposure and the use of tanning beds, poor sleep and disrupted sleep cycles, long-term night-shift work, and exposure to harmful environmental substances like radon gas.

Health professionals stress that preventing cancer does not necessitate drastic changes overnight. Instead, they advocate for small but consistent improvements in lifestyle, such as quitting smoking, reducing intake of processed foods and alcohol, maintaining physical activity, protecting the skin from excessive sun exposure, and ensuring adequate sleep, which collectively may significantly lower the long-term risk of cancer. Furthermore, regular health screenings and medical check-ups are also deemed vital for early detection and prevention.
